The principle passenger airline of New Zealand, the Air New Zealand has its base in Auckland International Airport. It cropped up on 26th April 1940 in the form of TEAL (Tasman Empire Airways Limited). Australian government had bought 50% of TEAL in the year 1953 with the other part being held back by the New Zealand government. Later in the year 1961, the government of New Zealand bought back the half share from the Australian government. The new name Air New Zealand was assigned to TEAL by New Zealand’s government on 1st April 1965.

The privatization of Air New Zealand occurred in 1989 under Brierley Investments Ltd. With the increase in demand for most flights and services by the travelers, the Air New Zealand experienced ample expansion in a short span of time.

In the present scenario, Air New Zealand comprises of four fully owned subsidiary airlines namely Air Nelson, Mount Cook Airline, Eagle Airways and Freedom Air. The international, domestic flights and cargo transport of Air New Zealand basically serve the Australasia and the south Pacific areas and continents namely North America, Europe and Asia.

It’s a member of the Star Alliance group. Along with the primary services, it also includes business units which offer services like engineering and ground handling.
